Standley Lake Gators Outpace Mullen at Home

by: Aaron Montgomery, Athletic Intern
The Mullen Softball team took on the Standley Lake Gators at Doc Scavuzzo Softball Field on Tuesday afternoon.  In the bottom of the 1st-inning, junior Morgan Stewart scored on a wild pitch tying the game up at 1-1. Later in the inning with the bases loaded, Alia Martinez was hit by a  pitch forcing in a run to give the Mustangs a 2-1 lead. A few batters later, Avery Oates, on a hot grounder resulting in a fielder’s choice, drove in the final run of the inning giving the Musangs a 3-1 lead.
In the third inning, an inning that has been Mullen’s nemesis of late, Gator senior Vanessa Butler, with one on, lined a pitch into the outfield for an inside the park homerun.  A few batters later, Mullen’s Cadence Hurtado made a great catch on a blistering line drive down the third baseline which would have been extra bases and runs scored.  However, later in the inning, the Gators loaded the bases, and senior Cove Taylor cleared them all with an inside the park home run.  The scoring would continue for Standley Lake as Vanessa Butler drove in another run with an RBI double.  Standley Lake took a commanding 10-3 lead.

The Gators would go on to tack on six more runs.  Mullen looked to mount a comeback late when Morgan Stewart pushed a run home on an RBI single, but that is all they could muster leaving runners on base.

The final score for the day was Mullen 4, Standley Lake 16.

Mullen is home again today as they take on the Rams from Green Mountain.
